St Mary’s Cathedral

I visited St Marys Cathedral in Portland yesterday for Mass with my good friends, Lori and Nellie. Lori’s brother was conducting the service so it was made even more special.

I got there early and spent a few minutes taking some photos of this beautiful place. The present Cathedral was built in 1925 and held its first service in February 1926. It was designed by the firm of Jacobberger and Smith in the Romanesque style with Byzantine features. There is beautiful artwork, paintings and stained glass in the Cathedral. Some of the stained glass dates from the earlier Cathedrals.

In 1851, a group of Catholics built a modest church near NW 5th and Couch. It was in a forested area and not near the center of town so it was later moved to SW3rd and Stark. It became a Cathedral in 1885, but after a flood in 1894, it was moved to NW 15th and Davis. In 1925, a new Carhedral was built at its present location at NW 18th and Couch.

My information about the Cathedral was taken from their website
