It’s soccer/football season in Portland, Oregon. Long lines started early, 2 1/2 hours before kick off. Forget that, let’s eat.
Yesterday afternoon, under sunny skies, was the MLS season opener in Portland, Oregon. The Timbers Army section opened the match by singing the National Anthem with heart, soul and waving of the Army scarves. At the end of the Anthem blue streamers flew from section 107 and green and white umbrellas were lifted. It was an amazing sight.
The game? Well we tied 3-3, but at the end of the first half it looked as if we would lose this opener. Our defense stunk and that’s being polite. Our goal keeper made HUGE errors. I was wondering if he left his brain….and hands…at home. I think my English football friends would say that he made grammar school mistakes….and it cost us dearly. The Timbers Army supports their team to their last breath but even they could not get behind this and started chanting the words “Timbers suck”.
After the second half started and probably an a– reaming in the locker room, the players looked like a whole new team and really hustled. We kept the ball at our end for most of the half and managed to make two goals that tied it up. We had more attempts than NY and for a while we thought we might even win, but we walked away with one point and were happy for that.
